The Sorrow of War, Bao Ninh - a war novel by a Vietnamese veteren, I can't imagine a better book if you're interested in the subject.
First They Killed My Father, Loung Ung - we didn't dig Cambodia, but we dug this book
The God of small things, Arundhati Roy - just preparing for Kerala
A Passage to India, EM Forster - a really good classic, in fact better than expected.
Collected Short Stories, Somerset Maugham - thanks to Pin for dishing this out before we left, it's good stuff
The Quiet American, Graham Greene - if you go to Vietnam you must read this
A Fine Balance, Rohinton Mistry - tales of caste and life in India, not light stuff
Wolf Solent, John Cowper Powys - never heard of it, but it turned out to be 600 pages of west country myth making. Not one for Mrs B.
A Dragon Apparent, Norman Lewis - travels through IndoChine in the dying days of the French administration. Not a quick read easy read.
Scoop, Evelyn Waugh - tip top fleet street knocking - still relevant
Breakfast at Tiffany's, Truman Capote - read on Ripple, it's speedy and not for super rats..
The Ebony Tower, John Fowles - short stories, Somerset pips him, but he's still good
Silas Marner, George Eliot - a classic sneaks in, victorian challenges and suitable wholesome
we'll try not to be too dull - get updates...
